Maine Coast Workshop Scholarship Program

Starting with the 2022 workshop season, the Maine Coast Workshop is pleased to announce a Scholarship Program in Traditional Hand Skills.

The program goals are to introduce or further the skills of high-school and college age young folk in the traditional ways of carving and working wood. With time we hope to introduce more traditional hand skills into the curriculum.

We seek applicants who have demonstrated a keen interest in folk ways, working with their hands, and who show the potential to maximally benefit from full and partial tuition scholarships at the Maine Coast Workshop in Camden, Maine.

In addition we offer an option for tuition coverage for both a young person of roughly high school age (we are flexible) plus a parent or grandparent who will attend the workshop with the student.  Both can share bench space and each can take the class as 2 students, or they can both work together as one.  We feel that there is value in fostering a generational father or mother-son or daughter experience.

Knowing that the cost to attend a workshop, as well as the cost of a potential stay in the Camden area can be prohibitive for many, we want to do all we can to provide an opportunity for interested young people to be a part of the exciting workshops that are offered at MCW.  We bring in the top artisans and master teachers worldwide to conduct classes which are typically 5 or 6 days in length.  Most of the classes are open to beginners or those with limited experience, but advanced students can benefit equally.  Please refer to the website for details:  About our School | Maine Coast Workshop

In addition, we are actively seeking sponsors who wish to help provide for the survival and the pride of our wonderful heritage of traditional Maine fine workmanship.  These are rapidly becoming lost arts. Sponsors will provide opportunities for younger generations to catch the joy and expertise of hand skills, gain confidence and self-mastery, and carry on our wonderful Maine heritage.

The vision for the Maine Coast Workshop was discussed in an interview with Popular Woodworking Magazine:

Maine Coast Workshop Scholarship application

Goal:  Our goal is to encourage young people to understand, appreciate, and become skilled in traditional American woodworking and handcraft.  In our highly technocratic age, we want to share the joys and satisfactions of achieving a high degree of skill making beautiful objects by hand.  By so doing, we wish to ensure the continued appreciation for our wonderful American heritage of hand craftsmanship.

The Maine Coast Workshop is developing a program to award a limited number of scholarships to high school and college age students who would not otherwise be able to attend due to financial limitations. The scholarship program helps make the unique Maine Coast Workshop experience attainable for people from a broad spectrum of socioeconomic backgrounds.  We also wish to foster a family oriented approach.  To this end, we also allow a parent/child to apply together.  In this case, we will provide tuition for both.  They can work together at the bench on one project or can work separately but at contiguous workspaces in order to share the experience.

Tuition-only scholarships cover the cost of tuition for any full-price, weekend, or week-long class. There are no eligibility requirements other than a demonstrated financial need and a demonstrated interest in learning traditional craftwork. As we seek sponsors who share our vision, we currently only have a limited amount of scholarship funding each year and encourage applicants to apply as early as possible.

Full scholarships cover the cost of tuition.  As we seek local sponsors, we hope to expand this to include housing, and meals.          For questions, please email us at dei.gratia123@gmail.com
